Teaching as a calling

Dr Jim" as his students, teachers, and school parents like to call him, always wanted to be a teacher.

Some of the most influential people in his life were teachers.  Dr Jim has even stayed in contact with his high school science teacher since graduating from high school and lists "Mr. Selley" as one of the most influential people in his life.  Dr Jim grew up on Florida's west coast and travelled to the Florida Keys in his youth to fish and dive with his family.

Living in the Fabulous Florida Keys

After receiving his bachelor's degree from FSU in 1971 Jim was thrilled to get an offer to teach in Key Largo.  As an avid diver, underwater photographer, student of marine science and a graduate of the Scientist in the Sea Program in Panama City Florida, he felt he had truly found his forever home.  Dr Jim still spends many hours on and under the water assisting the Coral Reef Foundation and on patrol with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Islamorada where he is a coxswain and the Flotilla Staff Officer for Operations.

World Wide Experience

After teaching for 6 years in Key Largo, starting the now famous Key Largo Safety Patrol, and receiving the Monroe County Teacher of the Year award in 1975, Jim began his Master's Degree program at the University of Miami where he met teachers who had been teaching in American Style International Schools around the world.  With a sense of adventure he and his wife Vickie applied for positions overseas and accepted teaching positions in Tunisia, on the North African coast.  They fell in love with international education and the expatriate community.  For the next 4 decades, with a 4 year break to study for his doctorate in education at UCF, Dr Jim and his family lived in 7 different countries around the world.  His passion for education and belief in the human spirit was solidified and strengthened by the wonderful international and American colleagues, students and parents he met on his journey.

Paying it forward

Dr Jim has always been involved with young people in as many ways as possible.  He coached JV basketball at Coral Shores High School, varsity basketball in the Philippines, Japan, Singapore and Saudi Arabia.  While in England he coached an American baseball team and a middle school basketball team.  When his son was young he coached Little League baseball.  Jim has two grown children and a grandaughter.  Now, after retiring 2 years ago, Dr Jim would like to "pay it forward"  and bring his knowledge, experience, and passion to the students of the Monroe County Schools in the Fabulous Florida Keys, the incredible place that give him his start.
